Camp NaNoWriMo

It's seems like I'm constantly entitling my post with some variation of "I'm Alive!!!" so I thought I would just cut to the chase this time. Obviously, I am alive, but I'm not really on livejournal much anymore. I've actually mostly moved to deviantart, which I thought I would never do because writing is writing and art is art. However, dA has a small little literature community that I'm trying to nestle into. I still check my friends page everyday out of habit, though it seems I'm not the only one who has moved on, and I'm the solo mod for the bigbang_mixup (and if I ever used non-writing related rants, that would take centerstage for seriously!), so I'm around in the ether.

Campnano is happening this year. I'll be writing Bound by Blood again this year because in sticking with camps past I am continuing the blood brothers series. Campnano 2011 was Thick as Blood and campnano 2012 was Bound by Blood. After that really terrible nano that I don't really want to talk about, I rewrote Thick as Blood. It now stands at 130.5k and I still need to write the last chapter and epilogue. Obviously, that will be finished before July 1st. This year, camp is customizable. We can choose what our word count goal will be.

For me, 50k is incredibly doable even when I face increasing apathy for my novel. I want to challenge myself, but how much...

50k = 1.6k a day
60k = 1.9k a day
75k = 2.4k a day
100k = 3.2k a day

I think I might go for 75k. Nano 2008 I got 63k between two different stories, so before I was very disciplined I was able to get over 60k. Decisions, decisions. Tomorrow I'll see about uploading some character sheets. I need to get two done like right now, but I keep putting them off. Accountability! I need you.

Dude. I don't even know how you do it... For every 10,000 words I write, I delete 7,000. It's the most horrific thing, and not to mention frustrating...

Right now I've got a goal of 10,000 because I'll take whatever the hell I can get. But I would LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE more!

Tell me your secret!

You know what I love now. Googledrive, though a full MS Word would work just as well. It's the comments feature that I love the best. A good portion (maybe all) of what I write is crap, but it's important to get the words down, so you know what needs to be changed. Just highlight, insert comments and you can explain why it should be deleted, what doesn't work, what would change to make it better all without having to delete anything.

I think I remember you saying you liked editing. I've found that I like it to. With the comments feature, I can tear my work to shreds without losing any of the word count.

The most important things never delete. Or, because advice really can't be absolutes, replace whatever you delete with even more words. Delete 7,000? Write 8,000. But I would definitely curb the desire to mass delete. 7,000 words is like erasing a week of writing. Can't really pretend it didn't happen.

Also, get in the habit of writing everyday. Even if you're tired and the day is practically over, just set the timer for ten minutes and write it. Often, if you can get ten minutes of writing, you find you actually have a desire to keep going. At least, I do. I find getting started each day to be the hardest. Once I'm back into the groove, I can write consistently until I go to bed.

Finally, I think having accountability motivates me to write more. If I have to tell someone 'no, I didn't write any words today' it's just too shameful and I'd rather just write something even if it's not my true daily goal. That's why I'm so much better about writing when I'm posting every day about it. (Also: writetrack serves as a substitute; writing below the daily goal puts you in the red! :0)

GREAT ADVICE. All of this. Thank you!

I'm so excited for Camp. (TOMORROW!!!!) It's a great way to keep myself motivated and held accountable for what I'm writing.

I've been revising what I do have and that's been going surprisingly well. I really, DESPERATELY need to stop doing the mass-delete thing. Right now, for this next month, it's all about ADDING WORDS!

Can't wait to keep up with you here during Camp! WOOT.

Happy to help!

How's camp going? Finding time to write? I'm writing, just not writing about writing. I haven't posted a journal about it yet. Ugh, I'm so bad.

Things are going well. So far, so good! :) Sadly, I work so much it makes it hard -- but I've been doing my best to keep up with it when I have the time!
